Even though the soviet-era propaganda movie "The Fall of Berlin" (Padeniye Berlina, by M. Chiaureli, 1948) does not shine by its historical accuracy, the original soundtrack is a true jewel composed by Dmitri Shostakovich. This 1991 recording of the most significant pieces from the original score is full of energy, thanks to Michail Jurowski conducting the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the Rias Kammerchoir. The clear rendition and full-scale orchestration of this CD is to be compared with the complete yet somewhat underperformed recording by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra (ref. Naxos 8570238)
As a prelude, this disc starts with a short yet moving soundtrack for a slightly older Soviet patriotic movie ('Zoya' by Lev Arnshtam, 1944) - another masterpiece from Shostakovich's career as a soundtrack-composer.
